WHOOP
Health and fitness wearable
Why it’s worth your time
WHOOP is a screenless wearable and subscription service focused on sleep, recovery, strain, and long-term health patterns. The device collects heart rate, heart-rate variability, sleep, respiratory, and activity data throughout the day, then translates those measurements into a small set of daily scores. Recovery estimates readiness, Strain measures accumulated cardiovascular load, and Sleep Performance compares actual sleep with the amount the system believes the body needs. The absence of a screen keeps attention inside the app and allows the band to function as a passive sensor rather than another notification device.
The Journal is where WHOOP earns more than a glance. Members log alcohol, late meals, stretching, meditation, medication, and other behaviors; after enough repetitions, patterns begin to appear beside recovery. Those are correlations, not divine instructions from the wrist. The subscription is expensive, sleep and activity detection can misfire, and a red score has an unfortunate talent for making breakfast feel like a disciplinary hearing. WHOOP works when the trends sharpen judgment. It becomes less healthy when the score starts running the household.

It is the Journal slowly showing which repeated behaviors actually move that score - late meals, alcohol, stretching, sleep consistency - after enough yes and no days to form a pattern. The screenless band helps because I am collecting data, not wearing another notification surface. The membership is expensive, and a red morning can become a tiny moral judgment if I let it. Used for trends rather than permission, it is exceptionally clarifying.”
